Hartlepool biologicals firm lead blood clot study that creates jobs

$

Hartlepool-based Hart Biologicals have joined with The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough after securing £120k government grant to study potentially fatal bloodcots.

Orthopaedic surgical procedures such as repairs to a hip fracture and hip and knee replacements carry a risk of causing a dangerous condition called venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Government research revealed that every year in England an estimated 25,000 deaths occur as a result of hospital-acquired VTE, and the study aims to reduce the risk to patients.

Hart is now expecting to create six new jobs in manufacturing and sales as a result of the investment, and it is hoped the initial study will lead to more high-level work in collaboration with local NHS Trusts and Universities.

The grant, awarded by the Academic Health Science Network for North East and North Cumbria (AHSN NENC) will fund the study being delivered by Prof Amar Rangan, a consultant in orthopaedics at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Alby Pattison, managing director at Hart Biologicals.

The study will develop a novel testing protocol by studying the blood from patients undergoing such procedures, using a relatively new technique of rotating thrombo-elastometry (ROTEM).

Prof Rangan said: “The study aims to assess if ROTEM can be used as a predictor of increased tendency of a person’s blood to clot, and therefore VTE, in patients who would not be classed as ‘at risk’ using conventional assessment.

“The ability to grade the risk and monitor effectiveness of intervention would increase health outcomes for patients at risk of VTE and also decrease long-term morbidity while also offering significant savings to the NHS through better patient management.”

Mr Pattison, from Hart Biologicals Ltd, added: “We will test blood samples from patients undergoing elective hip and knee replacements and from patients undergoing hip fracture surgery at various time points pre and post-surgery on ROTEM to see if there are any significant changes in the blood coagulation and platelet function that could correlate with a higher incidence, or risk, of VTE.

“The funding from AHSN for North East and North Cumbria will enable us to gain further knowledge and understanding of blood clotting in patients who have had operations and lead to further reduction of death and long term effects from VTE and Hart Biologicals will provide further matched funding worth £56,032.40 for ROTEM instrumentation and scientific support.”

The company has also more than doubled its staff in the last two years, taking its total team to over 50 and is continuing to recruit for people to fill technical positions at all levels within the company.

Manchester firm pioneers new ‘health check’ system

A US specialist in hospital access policy enforcement is celebrating the launch of its Manchester-based UK division – the first outside North America - with a landmark contract at one of the country’s biggest NHS trusts.

IntelliCentrics UK Limited, based at Manchester Business Park on Aviator Way, has implemented its Reptrax system for improving patient safety, infection control and procurement, at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust –  an internationally renowned centre of excellence that sees around 1.5m patients a year. It is the first Trust in the country to introduce the system.

The online Reptrax system, already the market leader in the US, allows hospitals to control access by healthcare industry representatives (HIRs), by ensuring only those that comply with the hospital’s specific policies gain access to patient sensitive or restricted areas. In Leeds, around 30 representatives from among 500 companies are on Trust premises at any one time.

Entry requirements are decided by individual hospitals but can include an up-to-date DBS (previously CRB) check, relevant immunisations, professional accreditations and compliance with hospital policies.

Rather than hospital staff having to conduct the checks, HIRs pre-register via the Reptrax system, which confirms their compliance status when they arrive on site, ensuring a secure, streamlined process. The system, which is free of charge to the NHS, helps:

·         safeguard patients by controlling access to sensitive areas

·         improve infection control

·         protect patients, staff and the public from unqualified or inappropriate individuals

·         quickly and easily implement hospital safety and security access policies, ensuring that industry representatives enter premises on the Trust’s terms

The system also helps with procurement, by making it harder for healthcare industry representatives to circumnavigate central buying policies through unscheduled visits to individual clinicians. It is used by more than 6,000 healthcare facilities in the US.

Following strong interest from a number of NHS Trusts, the company launched its UK arm in Manchester last year – with a service tailored for UK requirements.

Azadar Shah, Managing Director of IntelliCentrics UK, said: “We are very proud to partner with such an innovative and respected Trust as Leeds on this new safety and security initiative for the NHS.

“While as yet a little-known concept in the UK, I believe that healthcare industry representative credentialing will become a widely used technology, as hospitals and other public facilities look to improve the implementation of their safety and security access policies. We have a number of other contracts in the pipeline.“

He added: “IntelliCentrics UK has a full Manchester-based team of software developers, testers and engineers, plus product management, customer service and sales staff.“

George Anderson, senior category manager at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Effective monitoring and control of third party visitors is a challenge for any NHS Trust, particularly one as large as ours.

“We’re committed to innovation and so when we discovered IntelliCentrics, and the concept of healthcare industry representative credentialing, it became clear that the Reptrax system was the right solution for us. IntelliCentrics has created a system that is tailored to the particular needs of our Trust.“

He added: “Vendor companies have reacted well to the system since we launched. We are initially introducing it in theatre areas where patients are most vulnerable, and plan to roll it out across other important patient areas in the coming months, including radiology.“

North East software providers Synergi Information Technology have launched a recruitment drive to a number of sales and technical engineering staff to support its rapid growth.

The Gateshead-based business, fronted by well know North East businessman Peter Joynson, is driving the adoption of the next generation of IT business technology tools and is keen to develop the skills base in the region.

Synergi is promoting Microsoft technologies, such as Office 365 and SharePoint, along with specially designed business apps.

Peter Joynson added: “We’re really excited about the future. Companies are not just interested in our products but in our different approach to working with them; we are helping clients use technology better, establishing meaningful business relationships and embarking on a journey where we can get their business to move from good to great to extraordinary.“

Synergi intends to develop a dedicated SharePoint team in the near future but is already anticipating difficulty finding people with the rights skills.

Peter explained: “SharePoint used to be a specialist software tool typically only adopted by large or international corporates. That has changed and the integration of a more flexible version within the mainstream Office 365 package means there will be an explosion in use and support requirements.“

Synergi has held meetings with Gateshead College with a view to establishing some sort of partnership where young people may get hands on work experience within a growing technology business and where the business can play a lead role in helping to develop curriculum and the right courses to ensure young people are fit for employment.

Newcastle MP calls for evidence on how tech can improve government

Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Minister has called on North Easterners to contribute their views on how digital technology, and particularly the role of the internet, can improve government.

Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah outlined her Digital Government Review to delegates at this week’s Thinking Digital Conference and encouraged people to submit evidence across a range of key areas.

The session touched upon questions around how business could be responsible for accelerating the pace of change for digital inclusion of the population.

Chi, a former engineer, who has worked in the telecoms across the world, told the assembled delegates how her experience of increased telefony connection across Nigeria revolutionised people’s lives - and saw the potential in UK public services.

Chi said: “I spotted a link. Networks are by their very nature egalitarian, and there is an opportunity to develop government services that put the citizen in control.

“We’re not talking about customer or user focussed services, because government isn’t Tesco, but services that deliver real value for people.

“Citizens should be able to design the services they need in real time. The question is - how do you make that happen? You can’t have than unless everyone is online; civil servants are empowered; and the right architecture for the digital infrastructure.

“We have an opportunity here to change the value chain between government and the people. The internet can act as an amplifier, and if we have a digital divide, where some people are not plugged in, we’ll return to a 19th Century model of democracy - where only an elite few can influence.“

Professor Paul Watson of Newcastle University, who is involved in a major research project around digital inclusion, told the audience how his studies had highlighted many barriers to digital inclusion - not just age.

He said: “There are other issues beside age that need to be addressed. Many people are very nervous about security for instance, and there is disparity between how people assimilate information.

“I think there’s something to be said for the public sector showing the private sector the best way to deliver services.“

Paul added: “While in many cases the private tech sector does not cater for the over 50s - it’s actually these people that have the most buying power - so they should be paying attention.“

The Digital Government Review calls for evidence across key themes:

  • Access and skills.
  • Information Rights
  • Citizen Needs First
  • People-powered
  • Continuous Innovation
  • Digital Framework
  • Digital Procurement
  • Skills and Culture

The Digital Government Review will be delivered in a report, to be published before next year’s General Election. You can read the criteria and submit evidence via this page, before the June 14 deadline.

Newcastle disease diagnosis revolutionary wows audience at Thinking Digital Conference

The brains behind a revolutionary handheld DNA sequencing device developed in Newcastle shared a stage with top technology thinkers this week.

Jonathan O’Halloran, the founder and chief scientific officer of Centre for Life-based QuantuMDx stunned the audience at this week’s Thinking Digital Conference with his story - bringing biotechnology to market from his garage.

The entrepreneur had been branded “crazy” for pursuing his idea that diagnostic equipment could be delivered at speed via a handheld device - but now Jonathan’s firm operates from offices across four continents.

The molecular biologist initially began development in South Africa before funding dried up and he was invited to relocate the Centre for Life base.

QuantuMDx’s technology, essentially a molecular laboratory about the size of an iPad, can test samples to extract DNA and provide disease diagnosis.

Doctors in developing parts of the world could expect to wait weeks for the results of such testing - but the firm’s technology makes it possible within minutes, at the touch of a button.

Jonathan said: “It became clear that we needed a simplification of the process. We needed to put the sample in one end and then get a result out the other. Not only that - we needed it in 15 minutes.

“This was no mean feat as the process for extraction can take up to three hours alone. It required a lot of rethinking and re-strategising of the technology that was already there.

“That wasn’t enough for us though. Not only are we helping diagnosis, we’re extracting a lot of information from patients. That information - on a big scale - can be incredibly useful.

“It’s important in terms of surveillance. We want to be able to contain a pandemic with this data."

Jonathan explained that QuantuMDx’s ambition is now to configure the £500 hand-held device so that it can collect data on disease mutations across the world - a scheme he referred to as the “internet of life."

He added: “To get something like this working, to collect all this data and make use of it, is really tricky.

“We’re working with bodies like the World Health Organisation and other NGOs. We’re also working with big international companies that are helping us with the architecture.

“Our work will mean we truely understand the pathogens of our lifetime, and that means a future without epidemics or pandemics."

The £21.5 million buy-out and refinancing of ASK4, a Sheffield-based provider of telecommunications services to student accommodation and multi-tenant buildings has been completed by Darwin Private Equity.

ASK4 delivers WiFi, broadband and IPTV services to student accommodation buildings, private residential developments and serviced offices from its headquarters in Sheffield where it employs over 100 staff.

ASK4 was founded by Jonathan Burrows in 2000 to provide internet access services to private residential multi-tenant buildings.

The firm entered the student accommodation sector in 2005 following the acquisition of Horizon Telecoms, which was established by Jonathan Hudson.

The business, which recorded revenues of £10.2 million in 2013, now provides its services to over 100,000 users across the UK. ASK4 works with leading private student accommodation providers, directly with universities and more than 400 businesses.

The deal sees Darwin back ASK4’s management team, which is led by managing director Jonathan Burrows, as the firm looks to build on its rapid expansion since 2005 and target organic growth opportunities in the UK and international markets. The transaction was supported by acquisition finance facilities from Investec Growth & Acquisition Finance.

Jonathan Burrows said: “With demand greater than ever for reliable, high speed internet services, the timing is perfect for us to bring in external investment that will help us take the business into a new phase of growth.

"The team at Darwin has impressed us with its focus and understanding of our market. With its support, we are committed to developing our technology offering and continue to deliver value, innovation and quality service to our customers.“

Nick Jordan, partner of Darwin Private Equity, who will join the board at ASK4, commented: “ASK4 has transformed over the past decade to establish itself as one of the leading players in the high growth broadband and TV services market for student accommodation and other multi-tenant buildings.

"Having built an exceptional reputation with its customers through its focus on quality, we look forward to developing our partnership with Jonathan and the rest of the team, who are well placed to capitalise on a number of growth opportunities.“

EON Reality, the world’s leading interactive 3D software provider for business and education has confirmed a further three year contract with The Loop, Manchester’s fibre network, following a successful first year.

The Loop, which is part of Gamma Telecom (one of the four largest network carriers of voice minutes in the UK), is a fibre network stretching 82 km (50 miles) around the city of Manchester.

The Virtual Reality technology specialist has its European headquarters and VR Innovation Academy at One Central Park in east Manchester.

The Loop is connected to the One Central Park building where it also serves UMIC (University of Manchester Innovation Centre).

The fibre delivers superfast connectivity along with advanced IP (Internet Protocol) telephony and data services to the local business and data centre community. The services are underpinned and supported by more than 100 staff at Gamma’s Network Operations Centre in Manchester’s Trafford Park.

Ken Swain, EON Reality’s Managing Director in the UK said: “We create vast amounts of 3D content which is sent across the globe so it’s crucial we have high capacity connectivity.

“The Loop performs extremely well and really meets our needs.  We’re very fortunate to be located so close to this fibre network which has meant accessing it has been easy and very cost effective.   For us, connecting to The Loop seemed the obvious choice and we look forward to continuing this partnership.”

Ashley Griffiths, Managing Director of The Loop added: “EON Reality was one of our first customers and it’s great to see this relationship develop.  Bringing the fibre into One Central Park was very straight forward as the infrastructure is very close by.

“It’s great to have EON Reality’s European HQ here in Manchester and together we can support Manchester’s ambition to be one of the top 20 digital cities in the world by 2020.”

Revolutionary back pain treatment receives £350k investment

A University of Manchester spin-out company which has created a revolutionary non-surgical procedure for the treatment of chronic lower back pain, has secured a total £353,102 investment from consortium of backers.

The investment for Gelexir Healthcare Ltd (Gelexir) has come from The University of Manchester, The North West Fund for Biomedical (NWF4B) managed by SPARK Impact, Central Manchester Foundation Trust (CMFT) and Business Angels.

The company, which was founded on the back of discoveries and developments made at the University over the past 10 years will use the financial backing from investors to continue its program of advanced clinical trials scheduled to take place towards the end of 2015.

Gelexir CEO Dr Philippe Jenny said: "This funding is a great step forward as it provides the resources to transfer the discovery from the bench to the industrial world and pushes the technology through the demanding validation tests, heading towards the first patient."

Gelexir provides an innovative and cost-effective treatment for Chronic Lower Back Pain caused by Degenerative Disc Disease.

The process addresses the condition at an early stage and involves the injection of polymer microgels that restore the disc’s shock absorptive properties and replicate the bio-mechanical properties of a healthy intervertebral disc.

Dr Jenny added: “It has the potential to offer an alternative to spinal fusion techniques, which require invasive surgery and significant recovery times.  This will be a great step forward in providing an improved treatment and faster recovery for patients.”

Professor Tony Freemont, head of Manchester Medical School, and Gelexir Board Member hailed the treatment’s potential significance for back pain sufferers: "There is a real need for a simple, safe, easily administered treatment for back pain that is refractory to simple drug and physiotherapy, but does not necessitate major spine surgery.

"This funding will allow Gelexir to get closer to taking its product, which at its current state of development appears to fulfil all these criteria, closer to clinical trials."

The cash injection will provide the means for Gelexir to continue laboratory-based development and trials - with testing scheduled to commence with the help of patients in the latter half of 2015.

UMIP, the University’s agent for intellectual property (IP) commercialisation, has provided IP and business development expertise and also early-stage Proof-of-Principle funding and seed corn funding from its UMIP’s Premier Fund.

Translational funding has also been provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The North West Fund for Biomedical is a sub-fund of The North West Fund, a substantial pot of money jointly financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the European Investment Bank.

Major growth plans for Calibre following expansion into Jesmond

Newcastle ICT services firm Calibre Secured Networks Ltd is looking to double turnover year-on-year over the next three years following a move to larger premises in Jesmond.

The ambitious firm, which provides ICT and cyber-security solutions for public and private sector organisations, is targeting further growth in the core education and local government sectors on the back of relocation to new office space in Windsor Terrace.

The investment will more than double Calibre’s operational capacity and comes as the fast growing firm recently invested in new talent to support expansion plans and underpin the drive for growth over the next three years.

The boost will help to push the firm’s sales though the £3m mark by 2016 and grow staff numbers to around 20.

Earlier this year, Calibre appointed Shaun Phillips as its new technical director, who had previously worked in technical roles for Capita IT Services, BT, the NHS Trust and Sunderland City Council among others.

More capacity will bring closer together the sales, marketing and technical support functions for its range of ICT and cloud-based solutions.

The move is the latest success for the firm, which utilises advanced technology and software systems from Cisco and other leading vendors to develop integrated and bespoke security-focused ICT solutions.

The company works across the UK and Europe for clients who include Sage UK and Ireland, G4S and increasingly within education. The company recently secured a five year managed services contract in the face of fierce competition to deliver a new cloud-based wireless network solution, network, and infrastructure refresh and storage solution.

As it secures its client base and, in turn, revenue, Calibre’s managing director said momentum is gathering because Calibre has established itself as a reputable supplier delivering proven added value expertise with a track record that can be independently verified in a competitive sector.

“The future is exciting for us and we are busier now than ever before. We now have the foundations and plans in place to take us forward over the next three years.

“Clients are already benefiting from the investments we have made in resources. We now have the skills available to spearhead our growth as the economy continues to improve and more and more organisations look to upgrade or purchase new ICT equipment.“

She added that Calibre will continue to support its talented team while continuing to encourage and nurture a new generation of young, highly skilled people within the firm and the wider industry who will be based at the new office.

“We believe the North East is a hot-spot for emerging IT talent and are actively helping to drive and deliver the skills our people need as highlighted at the inaugural Dynamo event earlier this month which is growing the region’s IT economy.“
